How did the 1968 summer olympics in Mexico City affect the civil rights?

  • Tommie Smith a gold medalist at the 1968 summer olympics.

  • John Carlos a bronze medalist at the 1968 summer olympics.

  • At the medal ceremony while the national anthem was being played both simth and carlos did there own salute.

  • their salute, they raised one fist to the the sky and had their head bowed to the ground.

  • many american hated what they did because it was a sign of black power.

  • because of what they did they were banned from the rest of the games.

  • they were also subject to criticism.

  • back at there home they were subject to abuse.

  • in addition to all the other problems they recived death treats.

  • after the olympics smith and carlos both continued in athletics.

  • smith went and played american football with the cincinnati bengals

  • carlos went and equaled the 100m world record and then went to play for the philadelphia eagles.

  • smith is now a public peaker

  • carlos is a track and feild coach at Palm Springs High school.
