How did the 1968 summer olympics in Mexico City affect the civil rights?
Tommie Smith a gold medalist at the 1968 summer olympics.
John Carlos a bronze medalist at the 1968 summer olympics.
At the medal ceremony while the national anthem was being played both simth and carlos did there own salute.
their salute, they raised one fist to the the sky and had their head bowed to the ground.
many american hated what they did because it was a sign of black power.
because of what they did they were banned from the rest of the games.
they were also subject to criticism.
back at there home they were subject to abuse.
in addition to all the other problems they recived death treats.
after the olympics smith and carlos both continued in athletics.
smith went and played american football with the cincinnati bengals
carlos went and equaled the 100m world record and then went to play for the philadelphia eagles.
smith is now a public peaker
carlos is a track and feild coach at Palm Springs High school.
